At the CAAM: LUCY’S IRIS

DECCA at the Language School of Telde celebrated International Museum Day on 17th May at the CAAM visiting the exhibition called Lucy’s Iris, in which 25 African women artists display their works. A fascinating experience.

Discussion, VTS and emotions under the watchful eye of Dinkenesh!

DECCA at CAAM «Lucy’s Iris Exhibition»

Lucy’s Iris is an exhibition of the work of 25 contemporary African women artists living in the continent of Africa, on its islands and amid the diaspora.

The exhibition title is a metaphor alluding to the systems that impose colonial thought, and the need to overcome these systems and reinstate a viewpoint that should never have been removed. This is the reason for the reference to Lucy, the female hominid considered for many years to be the grandmother of humanity.

On 10th and 11th May 2017, Students from «Developing English Communicative Course through Art» visited the CAAM with their teacher Norberto Ojeda and thoughout a two-hour workshop, they could experience what it is meant to be a woman in Africa though the eyes of these modern African artists. The workshop objective was to practice students’ linguistic competence usisng modern art installations. Something we do not usually see everyday.
The exhibition Lucy’s Iris was curated by Ortado Brito, CAAM Museum Director.

Néstor Museum visit

Two Intermediate 2 groups and one Basic 2 group from EOI Las Palmas de Gran Canaria gathered last Thursday to visit Néstor Museum. They had previously prepared the visit in class and the result was amazing.

The teachers, Rosario Rosales and Eugenia González, chose Poema de la TierraPoema del AtlánticoEpitalamioLa Hermana de las Rosas and Adagio and planned a gallery walk. The idea was to have the students prepare short oral presentations about the selected paintings in class. Accordingly, the students worked in small groups to learn about Néstor and prepare a description of the painting they were assigned. Once inside the museum they became guides. They stood next to their assigned paintings and explained them to other students who played the role of tourists in the museum.

For the teachers it was a highly rewarding experience. They felt overly proud of their students’ commitment. The students appreciated the chance to practice their English. Here are some of their comments: «I feel that I want to know more about Néstor and his work. I want more activities like that.» «We had the opportunity to talk to people that are in the same or different levels.» «The director of the museum was so nice and his explanation so interesting!»

The colours of wine. Exhibition.

18th and 19th January 2017. The students from «Developing English Communicative Competence Course» (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) had the opportunity to visit the exhibition “The colours of wine” at San Martin Contemporary Art Centre, as part of the activities carried out in their course. An activity where we could explore Canarian Contemporary Art through Cristobal Guerra’s paintings and discover the creation of a wine and neuronal landscape. Amazing!

Mullsjö folkhögskola. A visit into the world of trolls and elves

On the 20th of October students and teachers from Mullsjö folkhögskola went visiting the exhibition of John Bauer who is most famous for his exotic paintings of trolls and elves. After getting a short introduction by a curator at the museum, we started with an interesting VTS using the painting I will give you this magic herb. The first part of the exhibition is an imaginative performance, working with senses. The task was to find a painting that the students wanted to take part in and give it a title. Next step was to give words to the emotions the picture awoke and share the thoughts with a classmate.
The second part concentrated on the life and works of John Bauer where the students have to study the works thoroughly in order to find answers to a quiz.
We had a very inspiring day, leatrollsrning a lot about art and John Bauer as well as improving our English!

A DAY AT THE MUSEUM

A day at the museum

On the 12th of April, students from Mullsjö folkhögskola visited the County museum at Jönköping. The museum has several exhibitions and we chose to work with two of them. The first one was «The picture of the year» which is a contest for journalists in Sweden and there were a lot of pictures that evoked a lot of emotions. The second exhibition was also the result of a contest for youths between 15-25. Six students from our school have been successful enough to be chosen to take part in the exhibition.

Our activity started with a presentation made by a guide from the museum that presented the two exhibitions which made a great introduction to the activities the student carried out in the museum.

Creativity and Communicative Competence at Antonio Padrón Museum

On the morning of May 14th, students of Intermedio 2-1(Saro Rosales’s students)  and Intermedio 1-1,2 (Charo González’s  students )visited Antonio Padrón’s museum in the northern city of Gáldar, Gran Canaria.

After doing some activities previously in class, such as a quiz,a reading, a listening   and some matching exercises, students checked what they had learnt at the spot.  One group worked at the artist’s room, firstly  answering a questionnaire, and later  working  with a particular painting that depicted their moods. The other two groups worked with Antonio Padron’s friends’ s paintings  at the indigenous room.  They had to walk around the room and guessed who the works of art belonged to .

Later on, all the students worked together at the central yard, Intermedio 2 students   painting  and drawing  what they had felt and the other two groups choosing three or more elements from the indigenous room and creating their own Canarian composition.

It was a wonderful morning full of excitement and creativity, we really  enjoyed it.

DECCA Project Erasmus+ Antonio Padrón Museum visit

Developing English Communicative Competence through Art – DECCA Project

Erasmus Plus K2 Project

Antonio Padrón Museum is one of the most impressive and interesting museums from Gran Canaria.  It was opened in 1971 and it is located in the painter’s own studio in Galdar  It is a regionalist style pavilion that also includes the garden and the family home. It was designed in the early twentieth century by the architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre, leader of the rationalist style in the Canaries-autorretrato

Antonio Padrón Rodriguez was born, lived and died in Gáldar. He was a painter, sculptor, ceramicist  and composer, … his life was spent in an intimate symbiosis with his land (Gáldar)  and its people. The land and the people around him constituted the world that the artist was vitally connected. His aspiration for a genuine art, his respect for the Canarian native aborigin art and his solitary nature, gave his work a special uniqueness within the Canary Art from the XXth century.

Today a group of students from EOI Las Palmas de Gran Canaria visited the museum and there they carried out some teaching activities connecting art with language learning.
