HALLOWEEN

CULTURAL HALLOWEEN AT CEIP PLAYA HONDA: SPOOKS, LEARNING AND FUN!
This year, at CEIP Playa Honda, we celebrated a very special Halloween, filled with activities, scares, and, above all, culture. Thanks to the CLIL programme and our team of teachers, the Full English Culture project allowed our students to explore the roots of this festivity with an educational and cultural twist. From spooky workshops and monster breakfasts to pumpkin, hat, and broomstick contests, each activity was an opportunity for students to engage with Anglo-Saxon culture in a practical and enjoyable way.
One of the highlights was the Tunnel of Terror, inspired by the tradition of Samhain. Pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 braved the eerie tunnel to place their offering on the altar, while families – transformed into terrifying actors – made each scare unforgettable. Our younger children also enjoyed Halloween-themed workshops, dances, and the classic trick or treat to wrap up the week.
We’re deeply grateful to the families who joined in and helped make this celebration such a success. See you next Halloween, ready to learn and enjoy together!
CHRISTMAS
CHRISTMAS POSTCARD EXCHANGE
Christmas has arrived at our school and from the CLIL Department we organized a Christmas Postcard exchange activity through all the students to send the best wishes for this special period.
From the little ones to 6th graders, they create and decorate a wonderful postcard to be a gift to other student of their level. They were so excited to see which one they would receive. Surprise and emotion were the main feelings in their faces in this activity where art and creativity work together to enjoy a remarkable moment.
We would also like to take this opportunity to wish you peace and joy in this holiday season and in the New Year.
We sincerely hope you enjoy this moment of serenity and family time.
Sending you all the Merry Christmas.

INFANT EDUCATION
HOW’S THE WEATHER LIKE TODAY?
Every morning at the assembly, we ask ‘the helper’ what the weather’s like today, if it’s hot or cold and what season it is. After, we sing the song about the weather and place the corresponding drawing in the window of our digital assembly. We know that here in Lanzarote it almost never rains, so when it happens it is a special day.

HO, HO, HO!!
Christmas arrived and we decorated the corridor of our school and made a little detail for home.
We painted with watercolors and decorated many Christmas balls with star stickers, we painted trees with tempera paints and straws and we made a decoration for the house with plasticine. They turned out super pretty!
HO, HO, HO!!

SECOND GRADE
A GATE FOR FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS
For this activity in our Science sessions, we followed the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
Second-grade students started by reading and listening to the book Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino. This not only helped them develop their reading, listening and speaking skills in English but also introduced them to the final project they would be working on.
Next, they were asked the following questions: Can you build a gate for five pumpkins? What materials do you need to build it? The students mentioned materials such as wood, a hammer, and nails. However, they were then challenged to think creatively, as they would not be using conventional materials but rather those available in the classroom. Pencils, erasers, and sharpeners could become a gate if arranged correctly.
The next step was to design their gate on paper, using only classroom materials. Each student sketched their own version of a gate for five little pumpkins.
To conclude the activity, we built the different designs together as a group. At this stage, students discovered that their designs needed some adjustments to ensure their structures could stand upright and support the weight of five small pumpkins.
The students were highly engaged and excited by the activity, eager to continue experimenting with science.

SCRATCH JR IN THE SCIENCE CLASS
The use of the ScratchJr app by second-grade students on their tablets brings multiple benefits to their learning.
First, they develop computational thinking. They learn to break down problems, identify patterns, and plan solutions through block-based programming. This helps them structure their thinking in a logical and organized way.
Second, active and creative learning takes place. With ScratchJr, students can create simulations of scientific phenomena, such as plant growth or the relationship between living beings. By programming their own animations, they internalize scientific concepts more effectively.
Third, ScratchJr projects can be developed in teams, promoting collaboration, communication, and idea sharingamong students.
Finally, students work with mathematical concepts such as sequences, patterns, coordinates, and time measurements, reinforcing their mathematical understanding within a scientific context.
The combination of science and programming makes learning more playful and interactive, increasing students’ motivation and interest.

Queridas familias,

FIFTH GRADE
KEYCHAINS FOR CANARIAS: ART, 3D DESIGN AND SOLIDARITY
From the Arts subject, the 5th grade students designed keychains with the word “Canarias”, which they later transformed into 3D designs. These were printed with the school’s 3D printer and painted with Podscast. Afterwards, they were sold during the Canarian Day celebration at the school, with the aim of raising funds to support research on Duchenne disease.
In addition, they painted 3D keychains with shapes representing our island such as Lanzarote, the Devil of Timanfaya, and the traditional camels, which were sold to raise funds for their end-of-year trip.
They turned out beautiful and full of creativity!

A DAY IN OUR LIVES
In the third term, the 5th grade students worked on vocabulary and grammatical structures related to the daily routine in English. As a final product, they prepared a presentation in which they explained their routine during a day, putting into practice what they had learned in class. Finally, they shared their work with the rest of the class and gave some amazing presentations!

SIXTH GRADE
A CELEBRATION OF YOUNG TALENT
During the third term, 6th grade students carried out a very special learning situation in English class: “Dream House”. This project focused on using English in meaningful and real-life contexts, working with basic vocabulary related to homes, objects, and daily routines.
The adventure began with an exciting challenge: create their dream house. Every time students communicated in English with a clear purpose (like asking for something, describing a room, or expressing likes and dislikes), they earned “money” in pounds sterling, learning about British culture and currency at the same time.
Together, we built a catalogue full of ideas, furniture, and useful items needed in a house. As students contributed their ideas and used English correctly, they collected pounds to buy the items for their dream homes.
Using Canva, they created their ideal houses and then presented them orally to the class in pairs or groups of three. It was a fun and educational experience, where they improved their English skills, teamwork, creativity, and digital competence.
Well done, 6th graders!
