BUSINESS ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT – GBE02

Objectives
The aims of this Business English course are:
 To develop and consolidate participants’ language skills by enhancing overall competency in
understanding and using both General English and effective business language usage in a multi-national
environment
 To enhance the competence of participants who have a professional need for Business English
 To cover, in a practical way, the English needed in everyday business and work situations
 To familiarise participants with the language and structures as they apply to management, enterprise, job
interviews, leadership, environmental issues, standards and ethics, advertising, telephone and email
English, presentations, branding, marketing and sales, customer relations management
 To enhance communication in English between teachers and their students
 To enhance competence in communication and sharing of knowledge and experiences at International
conferences and training courses where the main language is English
 To promote awareness of contemporary Ireland

Format
This is a 2-week course consisting of 40 hours of English language development in a multinational
environment at a level of language competence appropriate for the participant
Methodology
The overall approach in the language development classes is communicative with students encouraged and
facilitated to use the language learned in the classroom. The syllabus for the classes covers all the language
skills with a special focus on vocabulary building, effective reading skills and building confidence in speaking
fluently in English in a business/work related environment.

Course Programme
Day one
 On arrival participants take a written and oral English language placement test. They also attend an
induction session where they are given information about the school and Dublin. They also receive outof-
hours emergency contact telephone numbers for key Alpha personnel.
 Participants are placed in multinational Business English classes at their level and will follow the syllabus
at that level for the remainder of the programme.
Day two
 Continuation of development of general Business English language skills in multinational class at
appropriate level. Morning and afternoon programme
Day three
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Trinity College. Introduction to third level education in Ireland. Contribution of Trinity alumni to Irish and
international academic affairs. Book of Kells and influence of early Irish missionaries in Europe. Collecting
authentic materials. Developing speaking through short presentations on universities of participants.
Day four
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Afternoon excursion with other teachers to Guinness Storehouse. Collecting authentic texts describing
processes
 Day five
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Optional afternoon excursion with multinational students
Day six
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level. Morning and afternoon programme
Day seven
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level. Morning and afternoon programme
Day eight

Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Excursion with other teachers to National Library. Materials for developing writing skills in the classroom.
Day nine
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Optional afternoon excursion as or study period in school library
Day ten
 Continuation of development of Business English language skills in multinational class at appropriate
level.
 Optional afternoon excursion with multinational students.
